History of the community and the station X-K Fm

Community

  • In March 1990, the first plane with San people landed in Kimberley in the NC.
  • 1000 soldiers with their families and dependants ( about 6000) was broad to Schmidts drift 80 Km from Kimberley.
  • Everything was provided by the SADF, food, water and Army tents.
  • In line with the SADF policy of integration, San soldiers were deployed to military bases elsewhere, but were not allowed to be joined by their families and dependents.
  • At Schmidt drift, unskilled and illiterate mothers and elders became the heads of households.

Station

  • The !Xun & Khwe people at Schmidt’s drift, 80Km from Kimberley, where cut from every body and everything, they where listening to radio RSG, because Afrikaans is the communication language between the two communities but  they could not understand everything.
  • The community leaders was very concerned because the youth who was mixing home language with Afrikaans and they thought that the language will become extinct.
  • They approached one of the school teachers and asked him what can they do to preserve the San language.
